1. What Went Wrong?

As I had not been on our regular Tuesday outdoor painting days for several weeks I was excited to meet with my friends and members of Devon Art Society. After the get together coffee and chat it was time to paint. The weather was windy with strong gusts, two trees in planters had already been blown over, and there was a threat of showers. I looked around for a suitable view to paint and quickly settled on an interesting but busy composition and a sheltered location. In hindsight I perhaps should have considered a simpler composition and or a different location to set up.

Once I had set up and turned the camera on, I realised that I was in a significant shady spot, as I had to make adjustments to the camera to compensate for the bright background. This later translated to a difficulty in judging tone and colour as the view I was painting was in bright sunshine and both my palette and panel I was painting on was in shade. Despite this the final painting turned out to be reasonable with respect to tone and colour.

The second mistake and one that I should have noticed and adjusted for was the perspective distortion created from my standing position compared to the objects in my composition. I was too close to the subject which meant when looking at the table that was near to me my line of sight / head angle was probably tilted down 30 to 45 degrees and when viewing the trees and roofs of the buildings my line of sight / head angle was tilted up 30 to 45 degrees. This has resulted in an obvious error in perspective, in particular to the table in the foreground. Occasionally some paintings work with this scewed image effect which translates to the viewer seeing what the artist saw when looking at various angles, like a panoramic image. In my painting It was not something I planned and I do not feel it works in this case.

Having said all that, I am still pleased with the painting in that it captured the essence of the day. The joy of being with friends in a nice peaceful location painting outdoors. A heavenly day.
